ABOUT BODY BASICSPROGRAMSPARENTS

It takes a village to raise a child.

Body Basics doesn’t just serve youth, but their parents as well.  Let’s face it - most adults wish that we’d had better guidance through the stages of puberty and adolescence, and could use some guidance in helping our kids through their own development!  Body Basics provides parents with the support to do just that.  Baked into the curriculum are parent meetings where we discuss what your children will learn and how to support them through the program, as well as time with your child to discuss topics that are important to you both.

The Parent Meeting

A parenting adult is required to attend a mandatory parent meeting before a youth can attend the program, even if they are already enrolled. This mandatory parent meeting is meant to empower the adults in this kiddo's life, so that they feel just as prepared for what's ahead as their child.

At the mandatory parent meeting, we will:

● Create a safe and supportive environment with group agreements and facilitate a brief, voluntary check-in with parents as to where their preteens are in their development.

● Present parent education on the developmental phase their preteen is about to/is entering.

● Discuss what topics we will - and will not - be covering in class

● The content of class booklet used in class

● What parents can expect from their preteens during the program and how to be supportive

● Parent participation during the program outside of classes

● Offer resources to parents for both their preteens and for themselves

● Answer questions parents have about Body Basics

● Complete registration for the classes

● Schedule or confirm the dates and times of classes

Time Together

Baked into the curriculum is what we call Time Together, time with your child to discuss topics that are important to you both.

This is where you get to participate! A child's Time Together Partner is a mother, auntie, a guardian or adult friend - either a present or past menstruator - with whom your child feels safe asking 'awkward' questions, provided as prompts in their Little Red Home Journal.

After each class, your youth will come home with and 1-4 questions for discussion around their Time Together Partner's experiences as they were going through puberty. These questions will come home in their Little Red Home Journal with the page numbers circled that are to be discussed before the next class. Sharing your experiences of puberty helps them share their own.

Parent Support

I'm not a parent myself, but I do understand how important it is to get support when you're feeling overwhelmed and out of your depth. Puberty can be a challenging transition not just for your youth, but for you, too. Lots of personal stuff can come up as you and your child go through this transition together. If you ever feel like you need someone to listen when things get hard, you can always book a call with me, up to 75 minutes, for an additional fee.
